A List of Historic Firsts In Amarillo

Amarillo has an interesting history dating back to the 1800's.

Not being from Amarillo, I don't know a lot about its history. Even if you are from Amarillo, you might not know how the city got its start.

Here are a few things I found on a timeline at amarillo.gov.

1887 - In November, the first Post Office was opened and Robert M. Moore was the Postmaster.

1888 - The first District Court was established.

1888 - Mayvi Amarillo Cornelius was the first recorded child born in Amarillo.

1889 - The first hotel, The Amarillo Hotel, was built by Henry Sanborn.

1890 - The first city park was established and called Ellwood.

1892 - Amarillo National Bank was established.

1892 - Warren Wetsel was elected as the first mayor of Amarillo.

1894 - Amarillo High School held its first graduation. These graduates would be around 140 years old today.
