If you think you see a lot of cops on the streets of Amarillo, you're about to have your mind blown!  TxDot has approved a grant to increase the amount of officers on the streets for the 2013 holidays!  So far, no word of any check-points on New Years Eve in Amarillo, but you shouldn't be drinking and driving anyways...

"The Amarillo Police Dept. is taking steps to make this Christmas and New Year’s Holiday safe. The department has a traffic grant courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation that allows extra officers to patrol and concentrate on impaired drivers, speeding drivers, and drivers and occupants of vehicles not wearing seatbelts. There have been 28 fatal traffic collisions with 30 deaths in Amarillo this year. Fourteen of those accidents involved impaired drivers. Thirteen involved excessive speed on the part of one of the drivers. Ten of the fatalities were not properly restrained in the vehicle.
Extra officers will be on duty to concentrate on these violations to prevent these numbers from increasing. Please do not drive after consuming alcohol. Observe the speed limits, wear your seatbelt, and make sure children are secured with a seat belt or in a child safety seat. Children under the age of 8 are required to be in an approved child passenger safety seat system unless they are over four feet, nine inches tall.
Enforcement will be strict, we want everyone to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season."

Yes, they will be strict this holiday season!  Get a designated driver for NYE!  Wear your seat-belt!  If you have expired tags or inspection stickers, don't even bother driving your car!  Now may be a good time to make sure all your headlights, tail & brake lights, blinker lights and all that are working properly!
