The latest topic people are talking about is the new baseball stadium that is going to be built in downtown Amarillo, Texas. The venue will host of more sporting events and concerts in the city. MPEV is going to be built where the Coca-Cola plant next to the City Hall currently stands. Many local residents are wondering why this major project was never put to a vote. Was this a good idea for our city?

In a interview with our friends at ProNews 7, downtown officials said:

"It's not about baseball as it is about entertainment options you could offer with this multi-purpose event center," said John Lutz of Downtown Amarillo Inc., a non-profit corporation dedicated to improving Downtown Amarillo. "It would not only include baseball but would include concerts and other sporting activities."

The Amarillo Economic Development Corporation paid $8.5 million for the old Coca-Cola plant in downtown Amarillo to build the MPEV. Contractors are committed to this point and preparations for construction are under way.

You're probably wondering where this money is coming from? The project would be financed by the hotel occupancy tax. This is the tax that's collected when people stay in hotels mostly along the I-40 corridor. So, do you think this is a good idea for Amarillo? Could the money have gone to renovating the Civic Center? These are just a couple questions that are being brought up by residents.

Pros

More concerts.

More sporting events.

Adds more excitement to downtown.

New baseball stadium.

Cons

Doesn't hold more occupancy then the Civic Center.

Construction process.

Parking Issues.

Now you have to pay to park downtown.

Our current stadium is under used.

Chances of cancelled sporting events and concerts due to weather because it's an outdoor venue due to crazy Amarillo weather.

Take our poll below and tell us if you're in support of the new downtown renovation project.
