It's child abuse prevention month and CASA needs your help.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and CASA, (Court Appointed Special Advocates) here in the Panhandle needs you to help spread awareness.  Sadly, statistically, it’s almost certain that every person in Amarillo knows an abused child.  An Amarillo Globe News article last week reported that Potter County ranks extremely high in all risk factors tied to abuse.  This is both sad and preventable. Reporting abuse is not only the right thing to do, it’s the law.

There are 4 categories in child abuse:

  • Physical
  • Sexual
  • Emotional
  • Neglect

Unfortunately, child abuse is most often not a one time thing. It happens repeatedly regardless of income, race, and faith.

Most victims of abuse have low self-esteem.  They often feel like they are bad and deserve the abuse. Eating disorders and sleep disorders are common. Many victims often shows some form of self destructive behavior as well.
