Everyone loves their children.  And as parents we do our best to make sure they have a better life than we did, but when is it too much?

I grew up with three sisters and one brother, being raised by a single mother.  So needless to say we did not get a big birthday party every year.  But I do remember having a few.  It was always so exciting.  The decorations, the cake, and my favorite was the homemade punch.  Our parties usually included a pinata, but that was as far as it went.  No jumpy jump or renting places.

I went to a child's birthday party a few weeks ago, and all I kept thinking was this must have been expensive.  Now don't get me wrong, I am just as guilty.  I have a three year old and each year his birthday has been at a different location.  The Don Harrington Discovery center, All American Gymnastics, and Jump and Jive.  All these locations have cost more than $100 to rent.

But it even goes farther than that.  All of my family drive in from out of town, so I make sure to have enough food to feed them all.  So now by three year old's birthday party is costing hundreds of dollars.  It seems like every year his birthday party costs more and more.

Why do we do this?  What happened to simple birthday parties?  To tell you the truth I believe the kiddos would have just as much fun playing in the backyard as they would anywhere else.  So my question to you is, Why as parents do we go over board for our kid's birthday parties?  Please share.
