Last year the City of Canyon approved a $6,00,000 bond for a new city aquatic center.

The current pool in Canyon is actually over 60 years old. It's pretty basic with one kiddie pool and two small diving boards. Luckily, the antiquated summer hot spot will only be open one more season before it gets a much-needed makeover.

City Planner Randy Criswell said that as soon as the pool closes in fall 2016, they should be ready to begin construction.

The aquatic center will have slides, a lazy river, a kids' area with tipping buckets, a competition pool, a swimming pool, a group pavilion for parties, and a much bigger parking lot.

The swimming pool at West Texas A&M University has several of these features, but is housed indoors. The City Council wants an outdoor center to use during the summer.

According to Criswell, the cost of this project will affect residents' taxes by about $100 per year.
