So far, a $250,000 dent has been put in the $2.5 million budget the city of Amarillo is working with to fix the underground water pipe system.  Costs of a new occurrence are still in question, one that has left some motorists looking for an alternate route from 45th to I-27.  A break in a 12 inch cast iron pipe broke, leaving motorists on 45th Ave without access to the Canyon E-Way.

The break happened Saturday morning, causing a sinkhole to form on 45th Avenue, just west of Interstate 27.  While the water main was repaired within hours, it could take up to a week for road repairs to be complete.

As a result, 45th Avenue, immediately west of I-27, is closed to east and westbound travelers. Motorists cannot access northbound I-27 if they are eastbound on 45th Avenue and must use alternate routes to access I-27 northbound.

“Repairs to the pavement will occur as soon as possible,” says Tim Loan, assistant director of Utilities. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation while we work diligently to complete repairs."

Motorists traveling through the area are asked to drive with caution. For daily updates on repairs, follow the City of Amarillo on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CityofAmarillo or on Twitter @CityofAmarillo."

The city added they are committed to spending the entire budget to fixing the underground water system in Amarillo.
