Great Tips To Keep Your Dog Cool On These Extremely Hot Days

Lately we have been seeing temperatures rise quickly.  While we are getting miserable, so are our pets.  Here are few great tips to help keep your dog cool during the summer.

It is getting hot and quick. Once the temperatures hit the triple digits, we try to stay in as much as possible.  Well don't forget about your dog.  The best thing would be to bring your dog inside to enjoy the air conditioner, but here are a few tips to make sure your dog stays cool this summer.

NO PARKING ANYTIME: Never leave your dog in a parked car.  Cars can easily reach 118 degrees in just a few minutes, and rolling down the window DOES NOT help.

WATER: Make sure that your dog has plenty to drink.  Sometimes pets knock over their water bowls, so here is a great tip.  Buy a stake and put it in a shady place.  Then, get an angel food cake pan or bunt cake pan and fill it with fresh water.  Place the pan around the stake and the dog will not knock it over.

ICE: Even in shaded areas, water can heat up pretty fast.  Try putting some ice in the water during the hottest times of the day.  This will help the water stay cooler longer.

KIDDIE POOL: Dogs like to be refreshed, too.  Get a kiddie pool and fill it up with water so your dog can jump in, as often as he wants, and cool off.

SHADE: If your dog has a dog house in the sun, move it.  With the sun beating down on it, dog houses can get just as hot as a parked car.  Make sure your pet's house is in the shade.

WALK IN THE MORNING: Your dog still needs to exercise, so change the walking times.  Adjust your schedule and make time to walk your dog in the morning before it gets extremely hot.  If the sidewalk or pavement is too hot for you to walk barefoot, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

GROOM YOUR DOG: Especially if your dog has a lot of hair, make sure you keep them groomed.  A nice little trim and a good brushing will help them keep cool.

SUNSCREEN: Dogs can burn just like people, especially short haired and light colored dogs.  Talk to your vet and check to see what sunscreen works best for your dog.
