The follow post contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War, unless you don’t consider the full list of every character who appears in the movie a spoiler. It kind of feels like a spoiler to me, but I don’t know. I’m kind of sensitive about that stuff.

Quantity does not guarantee quality. But in the lead-up to Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel fans have fixated on numbers. Just how many heroes were in this thing? All of the Avengers, of course, and all of the Guardians of the Galaxy. But then the wild rumors started flying. There were supposedly 30 heroes in one scene alone! Chris Hemsworth said there were 76 cast members!

(Wait, 76? That’s crazy. Chris Hemsworth, how much Asgardian mead did you have the day you gave that interview?)

Now the movie is in theaters, and we can finally settle this once and for all. Just how many Marvel characters are in Avengers: Infinity War? (SPOILERSobviously):

By my count there are 28 Marvel heroes in the movie: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, Falcon, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Nebula, Doctor Strange, Wong, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier, Heimdall, Black Panther, Okoye, Shuri, M’Baku, Eitiri, Nick Fury, and Maria Hill.

There’s also a couple of supporting characters (almost literally a couple; basically everyone in this movie has super powers): Pepper Potts, William “Thunderbolt” Ross, Peter Parker’s best friend Ned, and, if you want to count him (and I’d argue we should, he’s in every movie), Stan Lee making his usual cameo. So that’s four more for the total.

Then there are the villains: Thanos, Loki, the Collector, Cull Obsidian, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, and the surprise return of the Red Skull. That’s eight more. Add all those categories together and you get 40 Marvel characters in Avengers: Infinity WarThat’s a pretty huge number! But it’s not 76. Sorry Chris Hemsworth.

Of course, Avengers 4 could still top it. For one thing, the end of Infinity War teases the arrival of Captain Marvel, which would bring the total to 41. Plus, we still haven’t gotten Forbush Man. He’s got to show up at some point.
