Hundreds of concerned parents have been signing a petition urging Amarillo ISD to change its policy about lice.

Many concerned parents are stepping forward, wanting to see a change not just in Amarillo, but the whole state of Texas. One parent's child contracted lice at her elementary school three times in the past two years. She decided after the third time, it was time for AISD to make a change to its lice policy.

The current lice policy says schools don't have to send kids home if they have active lice. The Department of State Health Services even advises parents that kids with active infestations should stay in school. After multiple instances of a child catching lice from another child at school, this parent felt that was enough and went forward by starting a petition.

The petition was set up yesterday and more than 800 parents have pledged their support.

Lice can only spread from head-to-head contact and is not considered as a communicable disease.
