When I was in my teens first getting my license, I had a certain level of fear of police. I didn’t like getting pulled over because I was consistently searched every time! The fear of having my car ripped apart by cops and left in pieces while I was handcuffed on the side of the road saying “there’s nothing in my car I have no idea why your taking my subs box apart,” left me in a state almost like a dog that’s been beaten to much. I would just duck, cover, hide, drive slow, everything I could possibly do to avoid the long arm of the law reaching out to me and accusing me of being this little drug carrying stoner they tagged me as. But with age comes wisdom as they say, and I can’t lie, I enjoy being in my 30’s! Age has brought this attitude with it, the attitude of “hey, I’m a dang citizen just like anybody else!” So now, I have adapted this attitude that if a cop is going to pull me over, however long it lasts be it 10-30 minutes, that’s going to be the worst time of his life (my cop friends excluded of course!). I do stupid things like barley crack my window and slide my license and registration out the crack and claim I “don’t feel safe” because I “have no idea if they are a real cop”, after all I’ve seen so many horror stories of people posing as policemen and robbing unsuspecting victims. Hey, we have the right to protect our lives, and if I am in fear of my life, I can react however I want! If tables were to turn I could take it to court. I actually saw this on the season opener of Sons of Anarchy the other day. The new Sherriff on the show talked about how the Sons could sue the city because police were chasing them without reason. It lead to a mess but long story short was the Sons were in fear of they’re lives and that gave them the right to actually speed away from the cops legally! Now I’m not condoning you go running from cops or trying to make your experiences with them unpleasant. In my experience, it’s funny but does eat up a lot of time. I also have a mounted camera in my car that focuses on me, you know because I’m self centered, but anyways I have video rolling on the incidents so unless you have that, it’s your word against theirs and you will lose every time! Either way, my shut out attitude and fear of police at an early age lead me to memorizing what I think are the top spots for speed traps in Amarillo. Hold on to your handcuffs as I take you to the streets and intersections you ALWAYS need to be on the look out for cops at!

    I-27 Between 45th & Georgia

So you’re driving down the Canyon E-Way, heading back to work from lunch, maybe you’re running late, then all of the sudden, there’s a motorcycle cop in your rear-view mirror with flashing lights. Boom! Done, over, you’re getting a ticket! It could’ve been avoided if you would’ve just had your eyes scoping the scene. Especially on this particular spot that’s famous for being a speed trap. You’re coming over the bridge of 45th and right as you top it, you are getting clocked by the cops. In my experience this speed trap is set up around lunch time. There’s a field there between the auto shop & Sitel. They will usually kick back a little bit in the field, out of sight and out of mind! Look out for this one ladies & gents! It’s a safe bet that if the weather is nice enough to ride a motorcycle, you will see about 5 motorcycle cops in this spot!

34th & Coulter Next To Chop Chop

Coulter Street is almost always a mess. It’s one of the most frustrating streets to drive down especially during heavy drive times. With the hospitals being on the street and the mouth of the mall entrance as well, it makes for some pretty congested conditions. And with that, come people that are weaving in and out of traffic trying to make it home early or to work on time. Hey police officers aren’t stupid they know they’ll fill a quota on Coulter! So you should know they will be waiting for you! In the shopping center at 34th & Coulter by Chop Chop, more often then not, I see 2-3 motorcycle cops parking lot pimping with they’re radars out looking for you to be speeding, or not wearing your seat belt. With the camera light being right down the street, this entire strip of Coulter needs to be approached with caution. It’s cool, just kick it down to the speed limit if your driving on Coulter between 45th & i-40, I give you a broad range because your safest like that. It won’t tack that much time on your commute and you & your wallet will be safe from tickets!

    Bell St. Between 45th & 34th

This one gets ugly folks and with Amarillo High being right there, your not just looking out for cops, your looking out for cops and crazy teens that just got their license yet for some reason they’re parents thought the first car they drive should be a Mustang GT or Camaro SS! Not cool at all! Anyways, this one isn’t crazy with cops as I only see 2 cops at a time in this particular area, but they are the most efficient motorcycle cops in our city. They will catch you I promise that! I have seen 1 of these motorcycle cops with 3 people pulled over at one time! That’s like super cop stuff right there! You’re going to find the cops kicking it by the bushes on the entrance of Puckett Drive between the 2 apartment complexes. Speeding, seat belts, tags & inspections, they are looking for it all and they have this uncanny ability to take 2 motorcycles and cover a massive area with them!

    I-40 Between Bell & Western

Getting close to the top spot and in my opinion this one is the 2nd highest area for speed traps and it creeps up on you like a thief in the night! I-40 literally sees 200,000+ cars a day! Half of them are people hauling butt through our city, the other half is your crazy cousin or aunt at the wheel. With so many cars and so many crazy drivers, the wolf pack comes out to play. I mean 8-10 motorcycle cops all in one place! They’ll cover East & West bound traffic so no direction is safe from the laser radar! And this one is so hard to spot because of the vegetation that runs along I-40. I swear they planted all those bushes so that cops would have a place to hide not even joking! Odds are, in heavy traffic, you’ll see an entire team of bike cops hiding out on I-40 between Bell & Western or they may even stretch the coverage down to Coulter I have seen them do that. But typically they hide out behind the bushes there between Bell & Western just waiting for you to come by speeding. I don’t ever risk it in this spot. I ALWAYS drive the speed limit when I’m on I-40 in this area. Just for a safe bet you should too! This is my number 2 spot on the list because this is by far one of the biggest and most well hid speed traps in the city.

    I-40 & Washington - Bridge

And now, time for the biggest and baddest speed trap in the 806! You’ve no doubt seen this one, maybe even fell victim to it. This one is taking the top spot on the countdown for a few reasons. 1, it’s just a good spot to catch people speeding. 2, it is by far the most well organized speed trap I have ever seen in my life! Whoever the cop is that thought this idea up should get a raise! Let’s dig into it shall we. 3, it will almost always catch you off guard. The design is just genius! What they do is plant 1 cop on the Washington street overpass; he’s the guy with the gun. He’ll be on the bridge laser tagging cars while 8 or 9 of his buddies are down on the highway waiting for him to give the cue to pull somebody over. With the cop being on the bridge, he can catch you miles away. So literally when your 2 miles away, your in the zone for being caught speeding. Don’t worry about seat belts or tags/inspection on this one, they are just looking for speeders and they are catching them! People trying to make it to downtown or the Canyon E-Way, folks passing through the city, people commuting to Dallas or OKC, not a single person is safe from this speed trap! When you see it, it’s already too late. When your radar or laser detector catches it, they’ve already caught you. Too many times I’ve seen people get caught speeding by this speed trap. Don’t you fall victim! When you’re in this area, you’re a suspect and you need to slow it down!
