Amarillo Independent School District has no school this Labor Day, like every year. This year the 4th of September is the day off for students and others. Some parents have made plans to go out of town this holiday weekend, so school will return back on Tuesday the 5th.

AISD has a committee made up of parents, teachers, and staff which review the school calendar about a year and a half in advance. The committee then decides snow days and what days seem fit for the district to have off. Memorial Day in the past has had classes for school, they will revise the schedule if needed.

State law requires schools to start on the 4th Monday in August, and over the last two years, that Monday has been falling later in the month on the calendar. So they've been pushing the end of school to the first week of June.

Is this a problem? Should your children go to school on a national holiday?
