Your family dynamics can really make you or break you. But for Shailene Woodley, her upbringing may have caused a little bit of both.

Speaking to Net-A-Porter for her cover story in The Edit, the fashion site’s digital magazine, the Divergent actress opened up about her somewhat dysfunctional, but totally supportive family.

“I came home to things that weren’t great,” Woodley shared, revealing that her psychologist father and counselor mother had a tendency to take people in need into their home.

“My family is super f—ed up in many ways, but they are also my everything,” the Snowden star added, noting their unconditional love as a major positive attribute. “They would do anything for me, and I would do anything for them. That’s a lot more than most people can say about their families. I’m grateful for the s— that happened.”

The actress also described the “reserve psychology” of how her parents would often side with classmates Woodley would get into arguments with, or make her and her brother reconcile by hugging on the lawn, in front of the neighbors, after getting into a fight.

“The whole time you’re just seething, you’re disliking this person with so much energy, but if you let go you have to stay there for an extra hour,” she said.

“That was the kind of reverse, manipulative psychology my parents were into,” Woodley continued. “Oh, I hated it. Now, of course, I understand…It gave me a broader outlook: Just put yourself in another person’s shoes.”
