Earlier, Angel Dee did a post about a bizarre story of a suspect that died while in custody of Amarillo Police.  Following up on the story, the Amarillo Police Department has released an official statement about the case.  Amarillo, this one exactly what Angel Dee said, bizarre!

Amarillo Police official statement:

"Wednesday June 11th, 2014 :: 11:51 a.m. CDT

Lt. Erick Bohannon - Special Crimes Unit

On June 11, 2014, at approximately 3:30 AM, an officer saw a suspect inside a pickup in a parking lot at 15th and S. Harrison. When the officer approached the suspect, he jumped into a white Chevy Camaro and fled the scene at a high rate of speed. Due to the unsafe speed at which the suspect fled, he was not pursued. Officers ran the license plate on the Camaro and came up with the suspect’s name and address.

As officers patrolled the area near the suspect’s house, the Camaro was spotted at 38th and S. Washington. Again, the suspect fled from officers at a high rate of speed.

At around 4:45 AM, officers spotted the Camaro in the parking lot of the Cattlemen’s Café at 3803 Amarillo Blvd. East. The suspect was confronted coming out of the restaurant. He fled on foot and officers gave chase. A perimeter was set up and a police K-9 was called to assist. Officers and the K-9 located the suspect in the backyard of a house on NE 9th Ave. He was taken into custody and placed in the backseat of a patrol car.

AMS responded to attend to the suspect and as they were talking to him, he became unresponsive. Paramedics attempted to revive the suspect but declared him dead at the scene. Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson ordered an autopsy, which will be done on June 12 in Lubbock. The suspect is not being identified pending notification of next of kin."

The Special Crimes Unit asks for anyone with information about this incident to call 806-378-9468.
