In 2013, there was an increase of 2 cents on property taxes in Amarillo.  Not even a year later, another increase is being proposed for 2014-2015. Another half a cent increase on property tax is being considered, along with an estimated three percent increase in sales taxes during the next fiscal year and taxable property increases from new buildings.  Are all these tax increases necessary?

"Just maintaining funding as the demand for services increases will mean moving backward, City Manager Jarrett Atkinson said."

What exactly does the City of Amarillo need more money for?  If we do see the tax increases, where would the money go?

The city gives the short answer of adding police officers, 7 new officers to be exact, replacing aging city vehicles, adding more capabilities to the drainage department, adding Animal Management and Welfare Department employees.

The money would also be used to give an average 2.75 percent salary increase for city employees and an improved pension plan for the city employees.  Plus, maintaining the city’s AAA bond rating for its general fund, water and sewer fund and drainage fund.

Do you feel like the plan for use of the money is appropriate?  From more police officers and Welfare Department employees, to new city vehicles, do you feel like the plan for the money is what Amarillo really needs?

Hearings for the proposed budget plan are about to begin, only time will tell if the proposal will become a reality.
