Xcel Energy has announced an official rate increase for Amarillo and the rest of Texas customers.  The price hike will take effect October 1st, 2014, so mentally prepare yourself to start seeing a bigger electric bill.

Under the settlement rates filed, the typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential bill will increase by approximately 6.3 percent, or $6.58 per month.  So it's not going to be the difference between having electricity or buying groceries.  Still, it feels like everything we do is costing more and more...except my Suddenlink Cable & Internet bill (shameless plug) haha!

It doesn't start and end there, Xcel is actually going to be implementing surcharges, or to put it simply, increase your bill even more.  This increase will basically make up for the original effective date of the rate increase, June 1st, and make up the money you would have paid through September 30th, 2014.  Recovering the difference between the old and new rates for that time period.

Are we finished with the rate increases yet?  I wish...

"Also today, Xcel Energy asked the Public Utility Commission for authority to add a temporary surcharge on Texas bills to recover past under-collections of fuel costs. If approved, the surcharge would increase a typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour bill by $2.70 per month, or 2.4 percent, starting Nov.1. The surcharge is planned to expire on April 30, 2015. Fuel costs are pass-through charges that rise and fall based on the cost of coal and natural gas used to generate power at area generating stations. Xcel Energy does not earn profit on fuel costs."

Even with all the rate increases, here in the Texas Panhandle, we pay below the national average.  I felt like you needed some comforting....

If you've been thinking about going off the grid, now's a good time.
