Here in Amarillo, you can pretty much just step outside and without a doubt you know you live in one of the windiest places in the nation!  But are we the windiest?  Well despite what you may think, no we are not the windiest city in the nation.  We have an annual average wind speed of about 13.5 mph, while that does rank us among the windiest cities in the nation, there are actually places where the annual average wind speed is more then 30 mph!  Now that's freaking windy!

Taking the crown of windiest city in the nation is Mt. Washington, NH, with an annual average wind speed of 35.1 mph!  That's more then double the average wind speed we see in Amarillo!

They call Chicago the windy city?  They have an average annual wind speed of 10.3 mph, ranking below cities with an average similar to Amarillo.

So what's the point of all this?  Well first I wanted to shut down the rumors that we are the windiest city in the nation and not getting credit for it.  While we do have a high annual average wind speed, there are worse places we could be living.

The final point of this blog was to share this pretty cool map I found online that actually shows real-time wind speed across the nation. It's pretty interesting to see for yourself real-time data of wind direction and speed, and to even compare our speed to other cities across the nation in a real-time fashion.

To see the wind map just click right here and it will take you right to it, what you do from there is all up to you.

National average wind speed data was gathered from NESDIS, click here if you'd like to see the chart for yourself.
