Today a press conference was held regarding a massive milestone, especially for those of us in this area. Route 66, the Mother Road, is getting ready to turn 100.

Amarillo isn't wasting any time in getting ready for the world to be at our doorstep.

A Massive Festival Is Planned In Amarillo To Celebrate Route 66 Centenial

To say that there is a festival being planned is a bit of an understatement. It would be more accurate to say that preparations are underway to put on an event that will possibly go down in history.

As it should. An icon only turns 100 once.

There are plans in place for a massive kick off party, a music fest, and a cornhole game that will summon officials from the Guinness Book of World Records. You can watch the press conference in the video below.

Personally, my favorite part of the press conference was Bobby admitting how much he wishes we called the game of cornhole anything else.

The Mother Road Turns 100 In 3 Short Years

In 2026, Route 66 will turn 100. Over the next few years there will be several celebrations and opportunities to think about just how much that stretch of road means to this area.

The best thing to do at the moment is hold on with both hands and wait for even more announcements. One statement from the press conference stood out to me more than any other. Route 66 turning 100 will bring the world to Amarillo.

It couldn't be more true. With tourists from all over the world already visiting the Mother Road in Yellow City, imagine what it will be like when she finally turns 100.

Look at How Amarillo's Old Route 66 Motels Looked Then & Now

The heyday of the Mother Road may be long gone, but would you believe that there's still plenty of the old motels where many a weary American family rested their heads during their interstate travels?

You won't believe some of these are still standing, much less still alive and (wait for it..) kickin'!
