Swimming is a big part of my memories growing up and is a huge part of the childhood experience. Whether you swim for exercise, for competition, or just to cool off, having the skills in the pool is very important.
I remember as a young kid the first time I headed to an open swim at a pool in Chicago I heard the kids talking about jumping in the deep end. I wanted to do that. It sounded like so much fun. Never mind the fact that I didn't know how to swim.
That story ended as you would expect: a lifeguard had to jump in and drag me out of the deep end. Very scary, but it didn't have to be if I knew how to swim. I did take swim lessons after that very scary situation, and I did end up on a swim team. So there is hope.
Learning to swim is a very important part of life. My daughter is in the process of looking for swim lessons for my granddaughter. This is a great time to take those swimming lessons as there are outdoor options.
You can do lessons at any point, though, as there are also year-round lesson options too.
