Fishing is one of those great memories I had growing up in the Texas Panhandle. Getting out with a rod, reel, and some bait could bring home dinner for the night. Oh, and the quietness. Even as a kid, I loved that.

Getting outside and learning a skill like fishing can be great. Now, I never mastered the art of cleaning the fish, but that should be someone else's job in the family. Not something I wanted to do. The idea of getting finned always freaked me out, I guess.

Why Fishing Is a Great Skill for Kids

Oh, but get me a tackle box and some water to go with my other supplies, and I can spend an afternoon enjoying nature. With the hopes of coming home with a haul as well.

What Is Hooked on Fishing?

If your kids have never been out fishing and don't have the first clue, now is the time to right that wrong. There are three more Hooked on Fishing events in Amarillo, put on by the City of Amarillo's Parks and Recreation department.

When and Where Are the Events?

One of them happens to be this weekend out at Martin Road Complex. It's a free camp for kids ages 5 - 15. They might discover that they really enjoy fishing.

Free fishing camp for kids at Martin Road this Saturday, June 21st! There are still spaces left, but they fill up fast. Register today to reserve your spot.

Don’t Miss the Final Fishing Dates

After this weekend's event, they will only have one left at John Ward Park (former Medi Park) on July 19th. The finale will be out again at Martin Road on September 6th. So even though time is running out, there are still a few more opportunities to get your kids introduced to fishing in Amarillo.
