Prior to moving to Texas, I had never heard of a kolache. Someone asked me shortly after I had moved here if I had one yet, and I was like, what in the world is a kolache?

I remember them explaining it to me. "It's basically just a sausage wrapped inside some warm bread". I thought, what's so special about that? I mean, I could grab a sausage, warm up some bread, then slap it in there. Doesn't seem all that great to me.

Then I finally had one, and thought to myself, this is the greatest thing ever. Slap a little mustard on that thing and I can sit there and eat six of them. 10+ years of living in Texas now and kolaches are one of my favorite breakfast foods.

Since moving to Amarillo though, I haven't had too many of them. I'm craving them recently, and I needed to find out who's got the best ones in town. So I hunkered down and started doing some research. Here are the ones that seemed to be talked about the most.

RISE N SHINE DONUTS

With two different locations here in Amarillo, one on 45th and another on Coulter, Rise N Shine seemed to get a LOT of love, both on Yelp and on Facebook. One of the biggest things mentioned about them is that they are always soft, and that is key when it comes to a good kolache.

BENJAMIN'S BAKERY

Found off of Western, Benjamin's got rave reviews and suggestions as THE place to go for kolaches here in Amarillo. Many people talking about just how good their jalapeno ones are, so maybe I'll suck it up and give it a rip. I'm not a huge jalapeno guy.

HOUSE OF DONUTS/GOT DONUTS

So these two get lumped together because they're apparently owned by the same people. Got Donuts in Canyon is the one that was getting a boatload of recommendations to try. You can get yourself a regular sized kolache, or you can venture into the world of large kolaches. Gimme a large cheese one and I'll be on my way.
