Will This Former Payless Location in Amarillo Finally See New Life?
There has been one empty building on Western Street that I have been keeping an eye on here in Amarillo. Over the past several months, there has been some work being done on it so I thought maybe, just maybe, it was getting new life.
This building sits on Western next to the McDonald's off of I-40. At one point, it was where a lot of us stopped to get shoes for the family. It was down the street from my daughter's daycare, Dandi Playschool. So there would be many days I would pick her up and we would grab dinner at McDonalds and go get her some new shoes.
What Was This Building Before?
Kids' feet grow so fast, and they always need a nice pair of shoes for a holiday so Payless ShoeSource was a location we would go to often. They had dress shoes, sandals, slippers, and athletic shoes. If you need shoes, they were there to help out a family, and at a great price.

Then we ended up losing all of our locations in Amarillo. That location on Western Street has been empty since. There has been a for sale or lease sign up there for an awfully long time, until recently.
That for sale or lease sign is still there, but the words "sold" could be seen on top. I will have to admit I got a little excited. This empty building could be so much. Would they tear it down and put something cool there? Would they leave it as it is and get some new business there? What could end up there?
What Could Be Next for This Location?
It sold a couple of weeks ago to JD Jones Property Holdings out of Wichita Falls, TX.
So a search on their name didn't leave me with a lot of answers. So why not look up their business address to see what that could show. Maybe that would unlock the answer. Not really. It doesn't look like much.
Maybe they will surprise us and do something cool with the location. That would be nice. I think I have invested too much time into watching this old Payless not live up to anything cool being there. Time will tell.
