I remember hearing about construction happening at the Rick Husband International Airport in Amarillo earlier. I didn't think much of it at the time because I didn't have any upcoming travel plans at the time.

Then my family talked us into traveling to Phoenix for Thanksgiving. This means I would have to make a trip to the airport. So I sent a text to a friend of mine who works for Southwest Airlines and I asked him what to expect. He is my go-to for anything travel-related.

He told me it was a mess but that the airport was getting prepared for the upcoming travel season. They know that the construction, which is only in phase one, is going to cause some headaches. They are getting ahead of the issue by securing overflow parking.

When I travel out of Amarillo I always park my car in the outside parking lot. It's cheaper and I am good with that. That is part of phase one in the construction plan. The roads entering the airport are closed and there is a detour. The cell phone lot is also unusable.

The cost of parking is not changing. The price will stay the same. Outdoor parking is $2 an hour with a ten-dollar max per day. If you get a space in the garage it is still $2 per half-hour with a fourteen-dollar max per day.

I am going to do something I don't normally do with a flight out of Amarillo. I am going to get there super early. I have no idea how this is all going to work and I would much rather be sitting comfortably past security and scrolling on social media with plenty of time. That sounds nicer than scrambling last minute.

That is not for me. I am glad this overflow parking is in place through the New Year. This will make things a little nicer.
