Things have gotten a little less sweet in a few Texas Panhandle towns. The announcement came out that a staple of their city was closing down. I feel the pain of these towns because this same thing happened in my small hometown of Canyon many years ago.

My Friday nights consisted of going to The Varsity to catch a new movie. Afterwards, we would head to Dairy Queen. I would always get a Full Meal Deal, which consisted of a burger, fries, a drink, and an ice cream treat afterward. There was nothing like a dipped cone.

Then one day Dairy Queen in Canyon was gone. The end of an era. It seems many road trips through small towns we could always count on Dairy Queen for a pit stop and a sweet treat.

Just yesterday the word was out that a few of those treasured Dairy Queen’s in the Texas Panhandle closed. That is right. No warning. Just a call from Dairy Queen Corporate.

Which Texas Panhandle Dairy Queen’s Closed For Good?

There is a long list of now "permanently closed" Dairy Queen's in the Texas Panhandle. Some are even up for auction, you can check those out HERE. No longer can we say DQ, That's what we love about Texas because a lot of them in the Texas Panhandle have closed:

  • Canadian, TX
  • Fritch, TX
  • Panhandle, TX
  • Hereford, TX
  • Olton, TX
  • Dumas, TX
  • Claude, TX

I have mentioned this list to a few of my friends and I have heard disbelief. One grew up in Hereford and that Dairy Queen was her childhood. The same shriek was heard about the location in Canadian, Texas and he felt the same. That was his place.

A lot of us are saying goodbye to our childhood with the sudden closing of the Dairy Queen we grew up visiting. It's a sad day for a lot of us.
