Dead Body Found Near Canyon Walmart Identified

On Monday, May 1st at 5:30 pm, the Randall County Sheriff's Officers were alerted to a body that was found by a citizen of Canyon.

UPDATE Tuesday, May 5th, 11:13 AM:

Canyon Police have identified the deceased body that was found on Monday, May 5th. The person was a 34-year-old male from Amarillo, Benjamin Adrian Martinez. Martinez was reported missing in September 2022.

The deceased was sent to Lubbock for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed Tuesday morning, May 2nd. Due to an ongoing investigation cause of death will not be released at this time.

The body was found within the tree line, just west of the Walmart Supercenter located on Husley Hills Road off I-27. Canyon Police officers responded to the area.

According to a press release from the Canyon Police Department, a positive identification was made and the authorities know the identity of the deceased. The person was identified as a missing person from Amarillo. As of this time, the name of the deceased will not be released until the next of kin can be identified.

Canyon Police notified the Amarillo Police Department of the discovery and they will work together during this investigation.

We can speculate on who the deceased might be, however, we won't. We will update, once more information is made available.

REVIEW: Amarillo Homicides in 2022

The year 2021 saw a staggering 24 homicides in Amarillo, Texas--the highest number the city had seen since 1994. A lower figure for 2022 was predicted, but the year finished out with a total of 28 homicides.
