Texas Dog’s Turkey Leg Feast Might Bring Home a Trophy

To preface anything, I just want to say that this Great Dane is going to be okay! Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to introduce you to this amazing Texas Great Dane whose epic turkey leg eating skills not only landed her at the E.R., but now she's up for an award!

Meet Foxtrot, a Great Dane from the Lone Star State with a heart of gold and a stomach that could probably take down a whole barbecue joint. She’s just been named a finalist for Nationwide’s Hambone Award, the annual honor given to pets who find the most ridiculous ways to land themselves in the vet’s office.

Her claim to fame? Snatching a turkey leg right out of the tongs in her owner’s hand- and swallowing it whole! No chewing, no savoring, just gone. If you’ve ever tried to wrestle food away from a determined Texas dog, you know Foxtrot’s human never stood a chance.

As the new owner of a big dog, a Husky to be exact, I can totally sympathize with Foxtrot's owner, they're so fast!

The Hambone Award isn’t just about weird pet mishaps, it’s about celebrating those “yep, that’s my pet” moments that make you laugh after you’ve paid the vet bill. And while Foxtrot’s competition is tough- including a bulldog that ate a taxidermied alligator and a dog that overdid it on cicadas- we’re putting our money on this Texas girl!

The best part? Foxtrot made a full recovery, probably wondering why the turkey leg supply chain dried up after that glorious day. Now she’s got her eyes (and stomach) set on that Hambone trophy and maybe a Petco gift card or two.
