Matt Lauer has co-anchored the "Today" show since 1997.  Earlier this year he hinted that he might not renew his contract when it's up at the end of this year.  So who better to replace him than Ryan Seacrest.

Ryan Seacrest has become a household name over the years.  He is the host on American Idol, he has his own radio show, and he hosts E! news. This doesn't even include all the red carpet events he hosts or the television shows he produces.

So when Matt Lauer hinted that he was ready to leave "Today", NBCUniversal decided to pursue a familiar name.  Now nothing is signed yet, they are just discussing the idea.  Matt Lauer might decide not to leave.  Or contract negotiations could fall apart.

This is also Comcast, who recently took majority stake in NBCUniversal, wanting to increase Seacrest's role in the company.  Seacrest's contract expires in early 2012, so I'm sure they want something good to lock him in.

I could actually see him as a great fit on "Today."  I mean he does E! news and morning shows are filled with celebrity news.  This just means more money in his pockets.  Do you think he is a good replacement choice?
