We've probably all taken videos of our kids and posted them online. Our kids playing games, doing something funny, maybe our kids swimming. We upload them to Facebook, Instagram, or even post them on YouTube. The problem is, we might be able to keep an eye on who watches those videos on social media because of privacy blocks on those platforms, but if they're uploaded to YouTube, they can catch fire and go viral in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately, videos of your kids might be part of YouTube's child porn algorithm.

Now, YouTube didn't set up a child porn algorithm, it just happened. You know that when you watch a video, you'll get suggestions about other videos in the same genre. That's YouTube trying to make sure you don't go to another search engine and continue clicking through their videos.

But some studies say that there is a rabbit hole effect on YouTube that will begin to suggest more and more extreme videos in the genre you started out watching. If you look for 9/11 news videos, it doesn't take any time for you to be bombarded with crazier and crazier conspiracy theory videos.

That's what happens with kid videos. Research showed that when someone watched erotic videos on YouTube, they would begin getting recommended videos of younger women, and it would progress to women posing provocatively in children’s clothing, and then videos of girls as young as 5 or 6 wearing bathing suits, getting dressed, or doing a split would show up.

The scary thing is, parents didn't know that such a thing was happening with their videos. A woman in Brazil noticed that a video she uploaded of her daughter and a friend playing in their bathing suits suddenly had over half a million views and got frightened. She discovered that the video was being viewed by people looking for erotic videos.

YouTube says they are working on an algorithm to correct the other algorithm, but as with any video of your child, you need to be aware that there are really sick people out there who can take a really innocent video and share it without you ever knowing it was shared. Be careful with your videos and pictures because once they're out there, they're out there.
