Just giving you the heads up here.  The Amarillo Police Department is upping the man power for the 4th of July week!  Expect to see extra police officers on the streets of Amarillo all the way through Sunday, July 7th.  The focus, DWI's ladies and gents.

"The Amarillo Police Department will put extra officers out from now through Sunday July 7th to focus on impaired drivers because of the celebrations that go along with Independence Day holiday. The July 4th holiday is recognized as one of the most deadly holidays on our roadways. On average there is an alcohol-related crash in Texas every 20 minutes. Last year, 1170 people were killed on Texas roads in alcohol-related crashes, and more than 9400 were seriously injured. If the possibility of killing yourself or someone else isn’t a good enough reason not to drink and drive, consider that DWI has long term, negative consequences. DWI penalties include jail time, a suspended driver’s license, and as much as $17,000 or more in fines, legal fees, and other expenses.
The Amarillo Police Department will take a “hard-nosed” approach to this DWI enforcement campaign. In Texas the legal limit for intoxication is .08 blood or breath alcohol concentration (BAC), however drivers that are stopped can be cited or arrested when impaired regardless of BAC."

To avoid this whole mess, plan ahead and make arrangements for a sober driver!  Well, that's if you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages I guess.  No need for a sober driver if you are in fact sober :)

All officers working this extra patrol and enforcement will be paid through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.
