Anytime something new is discovered, the person who found it usually gets to name the species or object.  This time, an new genus of fern was found and named after Lady Gaga.

On Tuesday, Duke University biologists unveiled a new genus of fern that contains 19 species.  The genus can be found in Central and South America, Mexico, Arizona, as well as Texas.  So what is this new fern called?  GAGA.

When I first saw this story I immediately thought why on earth would scientist name a new genus after a pop star.  Well because the two have so much in common.
Here is what the biologists said about the genus:

“At one stage of its life, the new genus Gaga has somewhat fluid definitions of gender and bears a striking resemblance to one of Gaga’s famous costumes,” they announced. “Members of the new genus also bear a distinct DNA sequence spelling GAGA.  The gaga germanotta of Costa Rica honors the artist, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta. In addition, a newly discovered Mexican fern species is named Gaga monstraparva, which translates to “monster little,” after Gaga’s fans, whom she calls “little monsters.”

So there you go.  The bisexual ferns are putting up their claws.  Congrats Lady Gaga!  What other celebrities do you think should be honored this way?
