Mother's Day is this Sunday! People are rushing around trying to decide what to get their moms and how to spend the day. With Mother's Day approaching, it is fun to see how other countries honor their moms. A lot of the countries have followed the US traditions, but there are a few unique ones.

  • Mother's Day In The US


    Here in the United States, we celebrate on the second Sunday of in the month of May. While it is a day to honor and thank our mom, we as a nation have commercialized the holiday. Cards, flowers, dinners, jewelry, and other gifts are given.

  • Mother's Day In Australia

    Mother's day in Australia is celebrated in similar fashion as the US. It falls on the second Sunday in May and it too has been extra commercialized. Moms wear carnations and are given gifts of thanks and appreciation. Florists and other manufacturers see high business traffic.

  • Mother's Day in Argentina

    Mother's Day in Argentina falls on the second Sunday in October. Mothers are celebrated with dinner, poems, and hand written letters and cards. Husband do all the cooking, cleaning, and caring for the family so the moms can relax.

  • Mother's Day in Mexico

    Mexico has a fixed day for its mother's day celebration. May 10th. They celebrate with bright colors, chocolate and a special mass. Serenades of 'las mananitas' are given along with breakfast of tamales and atole.

  • Mother's Day In Spain

    Unlike the US, Spain celebrates Mother's Day on December 8th. They not only pay tribute to their moms, but to the Virgin Mary as well.

  • Mother's Day In Sweden

    In Sweden, mother's day is celebrated on the last Sunday in May. It also has more of a charitable focus. The Swedish Red Cross sells small plastic flowers up to the day of the holiday. Then the proceeds are given to the poor moms and their children.

  • Mother's Day In Yugoslavia

    In Yugoslavia, mother's day falls in December. It is a part of a three day holiday that begins with Children's Day or “Dechiyi Dan” three days before Christmas. The following Sunday is Mother's Day or “Materitse”, and the Sunday after that is Father's Day or “Ochichi." On Children's Day the children are tied up and not released until they promise to be good. On Mother's day the mother is bound. To earn her freedom she must give the family treats and candy. The father gets tied the next Sunday but must promise more lavish gifts, clothing or shoes, and these items are usually the family's Christmas gifts. The typical gifts exchanged include candy, sweets, clothing, shoes, coats—and promises of good behavior

  • Mother's Day In Ireland

    In Ireland, mother's day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in the Christian fasting month of Lent. They present their moms with hand picked flowers and cards to express love and gratitude.

  • Mother's Day in Thailand

    In Thailand they celebrate mother's day on August 12th. This coincides with the birthday of their queen Sirikit Kitayakara. They celebrate their moms and their beloved queen.

  • Mother's Day In Other Countries


    New Zealand-They have picnics and give flowers and cards.

    Bahrain-They celebrate on the first day of Spring, March 21st.

    Ethiopia-They celebrate mid fall at the end of the rainy season. With a three day celebration.

    Italy-La Festa della Mamma. They have a feast with a heart shape cake.

    Norway-Celebrated the second Sunday in February.

    South Africa-Celebrated on the first Sunday in May.

    France-Celebrated the last Sunday in May with a family dinner and a cake that looks like a bouquet of flowers.
