The city of Amarillo has decided not to launch fireworks on the 4th of July.  With the drought we've been going through and really little to no rain in sight I don't expect this to change one bit.  From Amarillo Globe News:

“While we always work with the licensed fireworks company and local fire and emergency management officials every year to make the event as safe as possible, we believe the unprecedented drought we are having this year necessitates not using fireworks,” Publisher Les Simpson said. “However, we will still have an event at John Stiff Park on July 4th that will feature music, food and children’s events. We also have some exciting new additions to our event that we will announce very soon.”

Let's face it we've watched a good portion of our city burn down to the ground over the past few months.  I don't blame them one bit, but holding the event still?  A 4th of July event without fireworks sounds lame to me.  I haven't had a 4th of July off in like 13 years I think I may take advantage of it this year and go to the lake.  What are your plans now that you can't light fireworks and there's not going to be a display?
