Amarillo's Cardboard Boat Race Returns To Thompson Pool

Yes, it's going to be hot this weekend in Amarillo. It'll limit the things you want to do outdoors without question, but the pool is going to be a popular option this weekend. Even someone like me who isn't the biggest fan of getting in the pool is enjoying the thought of it.

With Amarillo being down two pools already, it's going to be a busy weekend no matter where you go. One pool in particular will be a little busier than usual, and that pool is already one of the most popular ones.

Thompson Pool Cardboard Boat Races Are Back

It's one of the most exciting events that happens at an Amarillo pool all year, and it comes with tons of cheering and competition. The Thompson Pool Cardboard Boat race is back! The best part about it? It happens a bit later at night when it's cooled down...well, ok, slightly cooler.

Happening this Saturday, July 25, at 7:30 pm, you'll have a chance to come out and cheer on these pretty amazing pieces of...I want to say machinery, but it's cardboard. Come early enough, and you can take a dip in the pool and cool off as well.

Will The Boats Race Against Each Other

As fun as that would be to watch, the boats won't all be in the pool at once. I mean, the pool is only so big; no one would be able to maneuver it without getting in a constant crash.

Boats will drop into the water, and it'll be a race to beat the clock. There are, however, multiple awards, not just the fastest boat. Awards will be given to the best decorated as well as the Titanic award. Yes, it's exactly what you think. That award is given to the boat that sinks the fastest.

How To Register Your Boat

There is still time to be able to register if you want. It's $10 per person to enter, and you can get your entry in here.

If you decide to hop in the race, make sure you follow specifications on building your boat. It must be large enough for a crew to fit in, and can be constructed only from cardboard and duct tape. You can decorate it however you want, but you can only use the cardboard and duct tape for the construction of the boat.
