The government shutdown is having an effect on many things and as you could expect, there's not a lot of good news to report.  Thankfully, for the mothers of Amarillo that need help, the Amarillo City Commission has accepted a 6 month contract for the WIC program.

"The Amarillo City Commission accepted a six-month contract for the City’s Women, Infants and Children nutritional program.

The money for the program is federal, passed through the Texas Department of Health Services and then through the city.

That means the government shutdown would negatively affect the program that currently services more than 8,000 participants.

James Allan of the City of Amarillo says, "think about it. That’s a very needed funding source. It’s extremely important. We need that funding."

An option to extend it another six months remains, but the government shutdown puts a lot of funding into question, including HUD grants.
