Antonio Brown References Nipsey Hussle After Being Released From New England Patriots, Faces Backlash

NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown is facing some serious backlash over a couple of social media moves.

On Friday (Sept. 20), the footballer was released from the New England Patriots less than two weeks after the franchise signed him to a one-year $15 million deal. This comes just over a week after it was confirmed that a woman accused him of rape in a civil suit.

Hours after the news broke of Brown’s release from the Patriots, the embattled player went on social media to express his thoughts on the matter. However, in doing so, he made the questionable decision of referencing the late Nipsey Hussle, which has provoked the ire of rap fans.

On his Twitter account, Brown tweeted “the marathon continues,” which his Nip’s iconic phrase and the title of his 2011 mixtape. Then on his both his Twitter and Instagram accounts, Brown shared a photo of Neighborhood Nip along with a bell hooks quote: "Sometimes people try to destroy you precisely because they recognize your power; Not because they don't see it, but because they see it and they don't want it to exist."

People were quick to pounce on Brown via his Twitter timeline, calling him out for invoking the rapper who was shot and killed on March 31.

"Nipsey rollin in his grave smh," tweeted one person. Another commenter tweeted, "Don’t ever compare Nipsey’s philosophy with what you’re going through. You did all of this to yourself. Get help cause you really looking like a clown right now."
