Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby Makes Stunning NFL Draft Move
It was just yesterday that we broke down the saga at Texas Tech regarding quarterback Brendan Sorsby. As of yesterday, the Red Raiders would be going to battle with Sorsby as QB1.
Then just that fast, Tech was out a quarterback. It's been one of the most fascinating stories we've seen in the Texas Panhandle in a while regarding sports. Caught gambling on a ton of football games, the NCAA suspended him. He fought it. He won...temporarily. Now, it appears Sorsby has said enough.
Sorsby To Enter NFL Supplemental Draft
With a looming appeal on the decision that was made for him to be allowed to continue his college career, Sorsby is apparently either worn out from the process or realizes the chances of him winning that appeal are slim.
He has decided his best path to continue his playing career is to offer himself up to NFL teams and enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. That means Texas Tech will be running with a starting QB this season that they weren't planning on, and Sorsby will attempt to make the leap.
What Is The NFL Supplemental Draft
It's not something you hear about very often, and that's mainly because teams don't typically take anyone in this particular draft. It's something that was created back in 1977, giving prospects who missed the filing deadline for the draft a chance to still be drafted by NFL teams.
This doesn't come without a cost, though. Any team that wants to draft a player essentially has to "bid" one of their draft picks for the next year in order to draft a player. For example, if they bid a third-round pick for someone, and they have the highest "bid", they'll get the player, but give up their third-round pick next year.
Will Sorsby Be Drafted
This is where things get interesting. Sorsby could be facing punishment from the NFL should he enter the league. However, a player like that has been drafted in the NFL Supplemental Draft before. Terrelle Pryor was facing a suspension if anyone selected him in the draft. Teams were fully aware of that, and the Raiders still took him. The same COULD happen with Sorsby.
The last time a player was drafted in the NFL Supplemental Draft was back in 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals took Jalen Thompson. They gave up a fifth-round draft pick to do so. The supplemental draft has produced several gems of players before, as Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter was selected in the supplemental draft.
What About The NIL Money
Sorsby received a pretty hefty sum of money to transfer to Texas Tech and play football. With him entering the NFL Supplemental Draft, it immediately brings questions as to what Texas Tech will do about the money already paid to him.
Well, Tech has already put an end to any speculation as they've said they will NOT seek to recoup any NIL money already paid out to Sorsby. That's a rarity in college sports these days. Some players have received money, then promptly transferred schools, forcing their previous school to seek legal help to recoup the money. This is a very different situation, though, and Tech has decided to just move on.
