How to Stop Catalytic Converter Theft in Amarillo
One of the biggest theft issues we've seen in recent years here in Amarillo has been catalytic converters. They don't seem like they'd be the easiest to get to on the car, but there's been such a rash of thefts of them over the last three to four years.
The problem is that once yours is gone, there's really no way for you to identify it if you happen to stumble upon it.
Why Have Catalytic Converter Thefts Risen
You would think there would be other car parts someone would want to take above a catalytic converter; however, there is one specific reason thieves have been taking them at a record pace.
The metals that are found within a catalytic converter are worth really good money, especially if you're able to collect a bunch of them. The thieves don't need the catalytic converter for their car; they need the money that's associated with the metal in it.

How Can You Get Yours Back If It's Stolen
Bottom line is you have to have some kind of marking that is official, should yours be recovered at some point. The Panhandle Auto Burglary and Theft Unit is here to help you with what you need during an upcoming free event.
On Wednesday, August 13, from 11 am to 4 pm, all you need to do is show up at 13651 I-40 W. Frontage Road in Amarillo to have your catalytic converter stamped. This will make it easier to get your catalytic converter back to you if it's recovered. They will also be stamping trailers at the free event.
