$20 Sports Physicals in Amarillo This Saturday

Being the parent of a couple of athletes, I understand the importance of a physical. If your kids are going to play sports in school here in Amarillo, getting a physical done is a requirement; otherwise, they won't be allowed to participate.

I know, it can be a bit of a pain, and most kids don't want to go through the process for various reasons. We don't want to pay for them as a parent, and the kids, well, they don't want the doctor doing certain tasks.

Why A Physical Is So Important

Lately, there have been a lot of young athletes in high school and college suddenly passing away or collapsing during games or practices. The wild part about it is that typically, they are the ones in the best shape out of any students who don't participate in athletics. So what's causing them to pass away unexpectedly?

It comes down to certain conditions you wouldn't know about until you start pushing your body to the limit. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is something you don't really know you have unless a physical is done, or until it's simply too late. The condition is genetic, and the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick. That makes it tough for the heart to effectively pump blood through it.

Texas Tech Physicians Pediatrics is doing physicals for just $20 a piece this Saturday from 9 am until Noon. They're located at 1400 South Coulter St., and they are only accepting cash for the physical.
