The summer heat has arrived in Amarillo. We've already seen several days in the 90s, and have even touched the triple digits. What's crazy, is that we're already seeing attempts by Mother Nature to break heat records in Yellow City. Yesterday, June 7, was almost one for the record books.

We Almost Broke A Heat Record Yesterday In Amarillo, Texas

Yesterday was a wild day. It felt insanely hot, and then the storms hit. When the storms hit, the temperature plummeted, rain fell, and we had plenty of thunder and lightning at my house. After the storm, we stepped outside to see a massive double rainbow.

If you felt like yesterday was insanely hot, that's because it almost was. According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, we almost broke the high-temperature record. In a post on social media, they say that we hit 102 degrees, which ties the record set in 1982. They also point out that there's not much relief expected today thanks to highs returning to around 100.

How To Protect Yourself During The Extreme Heat In Amarillo, Texas

The heat in the Texas panhandle is no joke. Things can go from bad to worse pretty quickly if you don't take care of yourself. No matter what it is you're doing outside, you need to take precautions.

First, drink plenty of water. There's no substitute for good old-fashioned H2O. Second, take plenty of breaks if you're doing any kind of strenuous activity outdoors. Third, try and limit your time outside to the earlier hours of the day or the evening. Go relax somewhere cool during the heat of the day.

Also, if you head out to Palo Duro Canyon, make sure you take sunscreen, and a quart of water per mile per person on the hike. Try to not be out there wandering around during the heat of the day. Hikes early in the day or the evening are a much better choice.
