As the old saying goes; everything is bigger in Texas. You pick it, and I'm sure I can find a version of whatever it is that you're thinking of right here in the Lone Star State that towers above your wildest dreams. Take wind turbines, for instance.

The biggest wind turbine in the U.S.? It's right here in Texas.

The Biggest Wind Turbine In The U.S. Is In The Texas Panhandle...Duh

It makes a lot of sense to put something that depends on wind to generate power in the Texas panhandle. When it comes to wind, we've got plenty of it. Plus, it's always blowing hard.

Whenever we see a weather forecast mentioning winds at 20 to 30mph, we all just stare at the TV screen and say, "...and?"

The title used to belong to an outfit up north. Leave it to Texas to say hold my beer and watch this.

WTAMU, A Wind Turbine Test Facility, And Over 600ft Of "Look What I Can Do"

The tallest wind turbine in the U.S. is actually a part of WTAMU. It's part of a wind turbine test facility.

Legends have it that, while it may not look impressive standing out there all by itself, you can hear the thing from a pretty good distance away. I don't think I've ever heard a wind turbine, and I'm sure this one makes a decent amount of noise if it's possible.

From toe to tip of one its blades is a whopping 653.5ft above the ground. To put it in perspective, the ones you see bunched up like a hi-tech windmill village reach less than 500ft.

The previous big dog in the yard was only 574ft.

Supposedly, it took 100 truck loads of parts just to build the crane that would be used to build this hulking metal monstrosity. The massive wind turbine exists to help, hopefully,  to continue to push the technology toward better and more reliable wind energy.

Can You Guess These Towns From Their Satellite Photos?

I'm always down for a good brain challenge. This one however got the best of me.
It's always a fun time looking up address or cities and seeing them from a satellite point of view. You start pointing out landmarks and things you recognize.

One thing you don't account for however is something looking bigger or smaller than you seemed to think it was. So we started grabbing a bunch of these satellite pictures of cities and towns around Amarillo.

As we looked at them, we thought to ourselves, "how fun would this be to actually have to GUESS what these places are?". So away we went.

Go ahead and try to see how many you can guess correctly!
