Amarillo Program That Helps Feed Kids Having To Cutback
Much has been made of all the different federal cutbacks that have happened in the U.S. lately, and many of them have affected programs right here in Texas.
Many people have lost jobs, and businesses that help support the community in various ways have been impacted so much, they've had to scale back with how they help.
One of those organizations is starting to really feel the effects of those cutbacks, and at the absolute wrong time.
Kids Cafe is a non-profit organization here in Amarillo that is all about feeding the kids of the city. There are a lot of families who can't afford to get their kids the amount of food they need to grow, and that's what Kids Cafe is all about.
They serve right around 1,400 kids throughout the school year each day, but those numbers rise in the summer due to parents not being able to afford enough food to keep in the house to feed them during those months off from school.
Summer break is right around the corner, and Kids Cafe has found themselves in a spot where they're going to have to limit the amount of meals they can provide as they're not receiving the same amount of federal funding.
Couple that with rising food costs due to various factors, and they're having to make severe adjustments just to be able to provide the amount of meals they have to limit themselves to.
They've had to shift some of the things they purchase while still balancing their meals properly, and because of the changes, have had to shave items such as avocados and other things from their menu because they've simply become too expensive to purchase.
Kids Cafe provides meals to 14 different centers in Amarillo that take in kids, and will continue to do so despite the cutbacks and rising costs.
