In light of the success of Furious 7 and the Diesel-less Need for Speed film, Electronic Arts is racing to China to film a sequel.

Variety reports that a sequel to last year's Need for Speed film is in development. 1905 Pictures, the China Movie Channel, Electronic Arts, and Jiaflix Enterprises intend to film a majority of the movie in China. Remember that EA brokered a deal with Disney to make new Star Wars games, it would make sense that Disney would do multiple movies for EA's Need for Speed series (though we'd love to see a live action Dead Space more). There is no word on whether or not Breaking Bad alumni Aaron Paul will return as the movie's protagonist, as the 2014 film received harsh reviews from critics across the nation. Nevertheless, the movie earned $203 million out of a budget of $66 million. The movie was quite popular in China as well, raking in a little over $65 million.

While the Jiaflix, the China Movie Channel, 1905 Pictures (known for its work in promoting and marketing the third Transformers movie in China, which made $330 million in the country) and EA partnership still needs DreamWorks to sign off on the project, as it currently holds the rights to the movie franchise.

“We are excited to work with EA, one of the world’s most recognized creative companies,” said Yin Cao, chairman of China Movie Channel. “We are also delighted that much of ‘Need for Speed 2′ would be filmed in China, and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent and elements.”

The Need for Speed movie was widely regarded as a ripoff of The Fast and the Furious franchise, and the announcement of a sequel comes a little too close to Furious 7's record-breaking $143 million opening weekend at the U.S. box office to be a coincidence.
