The Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight—Here’s Where to See It

For the past month or so, something cool has been going on in Amarillo's sky. If you're in a dark enough place without all sorts of artificial light, you've probably already seen a little bit of it, and it's always one of the coolest things to see.

The Perseid Meteor Shower started back on July 17, and many have been able to look up in the sky and see these meteors flying through the sky. It's truly a beautiful and cool sight to see, and if you have a telescope, you've been able to see some brilliance up close.

What Time Can You See the Perseids in Amarillo?

If you haven't caught it as of yet, well, you're here at the perfect time. Tonight, August 12, is the peak of the meteor shower. Overnight between midnight and 5:30 am, you'll be able to see the meteor shower at its brightest, biggest, and fastest.

When you look up to the sky, you should be able to see bright and fast meteors with trains behind them. So not like a shooting star, but something that flies through the sky with a trail behind it. Truly, it's one of the most beautiful things to see.

What Is The Perseid Meteor Shower?

The Perseid Meteor Shower is associated with Comet Swift-Tuttle. This particular meteor shower is considered the best meteor shower of the year because of its brightness and swift-moving meteors.

The Swift-Tuttle comet takes 133 years to orbit the Sun. As it travels around the sun, it leaves this dusty trail behind it. As Earth travels through that debris left behind, we get this brilliant meteor shower.

Where Can You Watch the Perseids Around Amarillo?

Anywhere you can find that has minimal city lighting is going to be your best bet. Finding yourself a remote area somewhere in the panhandle would be a good start if you're looking for a good place to see it.

Many have gone into Palo Duro Canyon, which is probably the best place to see the shower. Some pictures have surfaced from the last month from out at Palo Duro Canyon overnight, and they are incredible. The sky lights up beautifully there.
