Heads up, pet owners. You need to check your dog food.

Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. has voluntarily expanded the recall of pet food manufactured in their Chickasha, OK facility due to aflatoxin levels that are above acceptable limits.

According to the FDA website, aflatoxin is a toxin that comes from mold on corn and other grains used to make pet food.

No human illness has been reported.

The dog food impacted by the recall includes the Pro Pac, SportMix, Nunn Better Maintenance, and SportsTrail. The cat food is the Splash Fat Cat 32%, and SportMix.

The recall affects all pet food with expiration dates on or before July 9, 2022.

Signs that your pet may have aflatoxin poisoning include:

  • sluggishness
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting
  • jaundice (yellow tint to eyes, gums, skin)
  • diarrhea

If your pet has these symptoms, it is recommended that you contact a vet immediately and provide information on your pet's diet. Let them know which of the brands your pet has consumed and, if possible, take photos of the packaging. Try to include expiration date information.

For more information, follow this link to the FDA website.

Texas Panhandle Pet Savers shared the information earlier today. In it, they included the figures of 70 dogs that have died, and 80 that are sick.

If you have any of the listed dog or cat food in your home, pay close attention to your pet and get rid of the food immediately.

The FDA website also reminds you to wash your hands and any utensils that may have been used to handle the recalled pet food.
