Texas Parole Board to Decide on Selena’s Murderer This Month
March 31, 1995 is one of those dates that lives in Texas infamy. It was the day we lost one of our biggest and brightest lights. Someone we could be proud to call our own.
Selena Quintanilla was the biggest names in music. No, not just Hispanic/Latino music, but English pop music. She had long been the biggest star in Hispanic music, but she had just completed an English music album that was going to shoot her to superstardom.
Then it all came to a screeching halt. On that fateful day, Selena was shot and killed in a Corpus Christi hotel, and everything in Texas just stopped. The world was stunned, but Texas...man, it was devastating.
San Antonio native Yolanda Saldívar was the President of Selena's fan club, and had many close interactions with her because of it. As the court case goes, Selena questioned Saldívar about some embezzlement, and she became defensive and offended.
Boom, the shot goes off. She claims she was trying to commit suicide but it ended up hitting Selena and killing her. Life in prison was the sentence for Saldívar with the possibility of parole after 30 years served.
Well that 30 year date is coming, and Saldívar finds herself eligible for parole on March 30th. Saldívar's family is begging for her release, not only saying that she's served her time, but that she is a political prisoner at this point.
At this point, it's in the hands of The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles where they'll review her case and decide if she has indeed served her time for the crime and be freed.
No determinations have been made as of now, at least that we've heard of, and if she is indeed released from prison, there will no doubt be conditions that she must follow in order to stay out of prison.
This is a major hot button with many Texas residents, and obviously with Selena's family. They lost someone and something that can never be replaced. Most murderers don't get let out on parole unless something huge can be shown or proven.
Does Saldívar's lawyers have that proverbial smoking gun that will get her released? How will you feel is Saldívar is freed from prison? It's the first chance she's had to be paroled, and all eyes in Texas will be honed in on this decision coming March 30th.
