Club At Amarillo Middle School Impacting Community
School is full of a ton of different clubs students can join here in Amarillo. Some are pretty normal, such as yearbook, debate club, etc.
However, there is a middle school here in Amarillo that has one of the more interesting clubs around, and they're taking that club and doing big things with it for the community.
At Travis Middle School, they have a sewing club that students participate in. When you think of something like that, your brain immediately wants to think towards older women getting together to do quilting and that sort of thing.
However, this group is comprised of sixth graders who've taken up this incredibly valuable skill, and they are doing some big things with it.
Teacher Robin Powell is the sewing club leader, and she created the club due to her love of quilting and sewing. She saw it as a life skill and felt there was value. What she didn't expect was the popularity of the club.
25 kids initially signed up for the club when it was posted, and she was worried about not being able to handle that many kids.
Donations started pouring in, both from the school and outside donations. Sewing machines and fabric began to pour into the school and away they went on making quilts. As the club went about their business Powell began to think of what they could do with the quilts they were making.
She felt there needed to be a purpose to the club, so she told NewsChannel 10, "Let's teach them a service project", and that's when the club found new meaning.
All the quilts these students are piecing together will be donated to Transformation park on Friday, and Powell can hear and feel the sense of pride its given the students participating in the club.
