The Next SpongeBob Movie Will Give the SquarePants-Wearing Sponge an Origin Story
Have you ever wondered why SpongeBob lives in a pineapple, and one under the sea? Or what life was like for the absorbent and yellow and porous sea sponge before we met him? Maybe you’ve long wondered when he first purchased those square pants – did he always wear them? – or how he met Patrick and Sandy, or most importantly, why he is square!? Thankfully, the answers to such crucial mysteries may soon be revealed.
Three years after we first heard Paramount was planning a third SpongeBob SquarePants feature film, new details have arrived. It will be called SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s A Wonderful Sponge, and it will be an origin story. According to Cartoon Brew, Paramount animation president Mireille Soria shared the news during the recent VIEW Conference in Turin, Italy. She said it will pay homage to It’s a Wonderful Life (hence the subtitle), but will mostly takes us back to when our favorite anthropomorphic sponge first met his friends at camp. Soria said:
For the first time ever, we’re going to the get to the origin of how little SpongeBob met the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang at summer camp. The film’s opening will take place at Camp Coral when all of our favorite characters meet for the first time.
Little SpongeBob at camp with little Patrick and little Sandy! I bet little Plankton is a total jerk who hatches a plan to steal the camp cafeteria’s lunch recipes while Squidward is a grumpy camp counselor.
The new SpongeBob movie will also be the first time Bikini Bottom will be animated in full CG. Mikros Image, the company behind Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie will handle the animation – they’re really making animated pants their specialty, huh? – so prepare for things to look a little different than the 2D underwater world you’re used to.
Oh, and I buried the lede: Hans Zimmer is doing the friggin score. SpongeBob and Hans Zimmer! I hope he recreates the theme song (and I really hope he dresses up as a pirate to sing it). SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a Wonderful Sponge hits theaters on July 17, 2020, exactly 21 years after the Nickelodeon show first debuted. (I know, insane.)
