Yet another telephone scam that again is trying to use Xcel Energy's name to sucker people out of money!  Amarillo and Texas Panhandle residents be warned!  If you get a call from a person claiming to be with Xcel, saying your bill is overdue, and claiming your power is going to be shut off immediately unless you pay providing bank or credit card information, you're most likely getting a call from a scam artist.

Xcel Energy is aware of the situation, and has been posting warnings as far back as 2010.

The first thing you need to know is Xcel provides written notice of past due accounts, and never try to make contact initially by phone!

"If someone attempts to obtain personal or bank information from you, hang up. It is not necessary to call Xcel if you did not provide information. If you have concerns about your account, contact Xcel Energy at 800-895-4999.  Business accounts can call 800-481-4700.    It is not necessary to call the Amarillo Police Department unless the criminal caller has secured your personal bank or credit card information.  If you have given information to this scammer, advise your bank or credit card company.  Call the Amarillo Police Department, 378-3038, if you have suffered a loss or had your identity stolen, or report the incident online at www.police.amarillo.gov"
