But you might be surprised where we are ranked.Out of all the 50 United States, Texas ranked the 18th most heavily armed state in the country. There are 12.8 firearms for every 1,000 residents.  Roughly, that equals out to 337,309 guns among the 26 million residents of Texas. However, that number could be lower than the actual count.

Texas residents do not have to  register their firearms.  So, the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms bureau can count only those who had background checks when they bought their guns.

In case you were wondering how our neighbors ranked, Oklahoma ranked 19th with 12.3 guns per 1,000 residents. That's 47,419 registered firearms among 3,850,568 people.

New Mexico comes in at number four, with 40.5 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 84,471 registered firearms among 2,085,287 people.
