This Texas Town May Get Renamed Thanks To Mountain Dew
With Texas being as large of a state as it is, there are all these small towns that many of us don't even know exist. The only time we ever seem to find out about them is when we drive through them on a road trip.
There is a small town about 60 miles outside of Waco that has a history unlike any other though, and now it may make history once again.
The town is Dew, Texas...but it wasn't supposed to be that. The history of Dew, Texas dates all the way back to 1885 when the residents of the unincorporated community wanted to give their home a name. They had decided to name it after a resident in town, and his name was Drew.
Drew, Texas definitely seems to make a bit more sense than Dew, Texas. So how did it end up this way? That would be thanks to the postal authorities at the time.
They misread the application, missed the 'R', and approved the name change to Dew, Texas.
It may be time to give it another name change, however, it won't be to Drew as they intended over a century and a half ago.
WHAT WOULD THE NEW NAME BE
Mountain Dew has introduced a new spiked soda called Hard Mtn Dew, and they want Dew, Texas to be a huge part of its introduction into Texas. So much so that they've launched a Change.org petition to have the name permanently changed.
Their proposal is to rename the city Hard Dew, Texas, and they're promising to invest in it and bring all sorts of different things into the city and make it a must-stop destination.
WHAT IS THEIR PROPOSAL
The main structure of the proposal is that Mountain Dew would invest in the town by donating a community enhancement fund for the town, as well as holding happy hours for all the residents there.
Mountain Dew has commented on it saying, "Renaming Dew, Texas, to Hard Dew, Texas, would be the ultimate way to celebrate, while also giving back to the community and creating a piece of iconic history that’s as bold as the brand itself."
ARE THEY BRINGING ANYTHING ELSE TO THE TABLE
They sure are. So much so that the town would almost look like a Mountain Dew museum somehow.
Mountain Dew has promised to build a larger-than-life Hard Mtn Dew can that will quickly become one of the most famed roadside attractions. They've also said they'd install a massive sign saying "Welcome to Hard Dew, Texas" that can't be missed.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE DRINK GOES AWAY AT SOME POINT
There's an answer we don't have, and it's something that residents will have to think about long and hard. Does Mountain Dew come in and take everything down should the product fail? Does it stay and just become a possible revenue generator for the town?
We may never find out. The Change.org petition needs to obtain 10,000 signatures just to be placed in front of the Freestone County Commissioners Court, and as of this writing, the petition only has 272 signatures.
That's a far cry from where they need to be, but hey, anything is possible right?
